Access and correction requests under Quebec's Law 25 (English)
Under Quebec's Law 25, any person has the right to access the personal information a business holds about them and to request the correction of information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or equivocal. The business must respond with diligence and no later than 30 days after the request; no response within that period is treated as a refusal, which opens a recourse before the Commission d'acces a l'information. Access is free by default, though reasonable fees may be charged for transcription, reproduction, or transmission, and the applicant must be told the approximate amount beforehand. A refusal, in whole or in part, must be in writing, give reasons, cite the provision relied on, and inform the person of their recourse and the time limit to exercise it. Since 22 September 2024, a data-portability right applies: on request, computerized personal information the person provided must be released in a structured, commonly used technological format, or transmitted to a third party they designate. HelionAI helps organizations track and document these requests.
